Bashley 3rds made the short trip to play local rivals Cadnam at their lovely New Forest ground. Bashley won the toss and elected to bat first on a slow green wicket. After the early loss of both openers Bashley were reduced to 17 for 2 after 6 overs. Graham Pardey and skipper Michael O’Sullivan then steadied the innings against an accurate Cadnam bowling attack. They had taken the score to 89 when Pardey was caught for 18 just before the mid innings break. O’Sullivan looked in excellent touch, mixing a barrage of boundary shots with quick singles before he mistimed a drive and was caught for 60. Sam Scott continued the recovery and found good support from Jack Ransom. They had taken the score to 171 when Scott was bowled for an excellent 45. Ransom continued to run the quick singles before he was bowled for 24. A late 13 not out by Jason Eede, including one glorious 6, eventually took Bashley to 194 for 9 after their 45 overs. Cadnam skipper Matt Maiden led their attack and finished with 3 for 45.
After tea, Sean Read made early inroads for Bashley with two early wickets. A threatening partnership for Cadnam then developed between Godfrey and Cooper which took the Cadnam reply to 95 for 2 at the mid innings break. A short delay due to rain led to a revised Cadnam victory target of 173 off 40 overs. On the resumption, young Toby Mills (2 for 39) immediately dismissed both Godfrey (53) and Cooper (30) to suddenly swing the match back in Bashley’s favour. Sam Scott (2 for 31) maintained the pressure and as the required scoring rate climbed, sharp ground fielding by Bashley resulted in two run outs. Opening bowlers Read (3 for 46) and Jason Eede (1 for 47) returned to share the last two wickets and to wrap up the Cadnam innings in the final over as Bashley won a close and exciting game by 9 runs.
