The season opened with a competitive inter club game captained by the first and second XI captains Mike Porter and Ross Grierson. The former won the toss and elected to bat with new signing Jay Van Wyk opening the batting with Josh Digby and getting the side off to a steady start until Jay was unfortunately run out after a brilliant piece of fielding by Tom Jacques. Josh made up for his ambitious calling by going on to score 100 before being retired. With some rusty bowling creating an ever increasing extras total and a flourish at the end from Luke Stubbington and Simon Morris a total of 242 was amassed in the 45 overs. Jack Ransom was the pick of the bowlers with steady spells from Kevin Nash, Sam Thompson and Neil Taylor. An impressive performance from Tom Saunders was well commented on by the experienced onlookers.
The run chase was started by new signing Max Trueman and Tom Gates both of whom scored freely until Max fell in the 30’s. Tom went on to get 50 and was joined by Tom Jacques who eventually holed out for 51. With 7 an over required over the last 8 overs Chris Ridley and Ross Grierson steered his team home with 2 balls remaining. Pierre Van Wyk also played his first game for the club and bowled an aggressive opening spell.
A competitive game which allowed all the players to get bat on ball and loosen the no doubt aching bowling arms.
